Research Assistant Position: Global Public Health
The Center for High Impact Philanthropy (CHIP) seeks to define the efficient frontier of philanthropy where nonprofit financing is linked to potential for impact. Its goal is to develop the information, tools, and metrics that will aid philanthropists in making smart social investments. The Center’s initial work will be in three areas: K-12 urban education, global health and development, and improving the lives of disadvantaged populations in the US.
The Center’s Global Public Health Program is looking for a Public Health Master’s or PhD candidate in a related discipline (Population Studies, Health Policy etc.) to assist its Global Public Health Lead with research and related tasks. Specifically, the research assistant will help with literature reviews and methodology assessments, provide interview support, and assist in the development of the Center’s tools and products.
Candidates should have taken a research methods course and have an interest in global public health. He or she should have excellent research and writing ability, experience with Excel, Filemaker Pro or similar database software; excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to handle details as well as multiple projects; self-direction and motivation; and an interest in tackling new projects. Prior experience working in global public health and/or the non-profit sector would be beneficial.

The Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) has a social work opening for a Recovery Coordinator (RC). The RC will likely be involved in training and educating staff on recovery and community integration concepts, work with staff in various programs to transform their services to become more recovery-oriented, coordinate recovery-oriented activities at the VAMC, and provide a limited amount of direct supports to persons in recovery. This is an exciting time for such initiatives within the VA pertaining to veterans with serious mental illnesses and includes substantial commitment of resources. The position may involve some local and possibly regional policy-level work.
The Local Recovery Coordinator serves to assist in implementation of policies and procedures from the National Recovery Coordinator and to facilitate implementation of recovery oriented services in Mental Health programs, which includes education of providers and veterans and their families on recovery and evaluation of implementation efforts. Functions as a champion and advocate for the recovery model, and as a recovery ombudsman to the Mental Health Division Manager, program managers, and staff on recovery and implementation of recovery oriented services. Serves as consultant to Mental Health programs and recovering veterans in development of peer support groups, consumer counseling, and consumer operated services. Coordinates with various resources to develop an ongoing education plan for providers. This plan includes presentations about elements of recovery (e.g., recovery plans) and recovery implementation by experts; presentations by recovering individuals, especially veterans; and information about community mental health support groups and other resources. Responsible for coordinating the evaluation of recovery implementation at the facility and reporting results to the National Recovery Coordinator.

This individual should have at least 3 years of experience teaching ABE/GED and preparing students to take the GED. The ability to motivate is a strong plus.
Salary:
Part-time position, 20 hours per week, $25,000 per year. This position is considered a consultant independent contractor position. As such it is not considered a regular employee and no fringe benefits are available.

Requirements:
Top candidate has: BA degree (Masters preferred), driver’s license and fundraising experience; experience with word processing, database and spreadsheet programs; excellent organizational, communications and analytical skills; ability to work productively on deadline-driven diverse projects simultaneously; ability to switch from self-guided to extensively directed projects and excellent written and oral communication skills.
