Suicide Awareness in the School Setting
Overview: Suicide, while decreasing in teens over the past few years, remains a significant problem and one that often presents itself in the school setting. School personnel need to have a working knowledge of the risk factors, behaviors exhibited by suicidal students and strategies to effectively intervene. This workshop will outline these behaviors that indicate a student at risk and interventions to deal with these concerns from a systemic level.
Objectives: Participants will: 1) understand the theory behind crisis intervention and its application to the school setting; 2) develop an understanding of suicide risk behaviors; 3) learn skills to develop a team approach to handling suicidal students in the school setting;
Method(s) of Instruction: Power Point, handouts, case examples, and discussion.

Joseph McBride, MSW, LCSW, has been a Part-time lecturer since 1998 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice and is the Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development. He is currently in private practice in Lawrenceville, NJ. His areas of practice specialization include family therapy, death and dying and bereavement, trauma, coping with chronic illness and behavior problems in children.
