Diverse Family Structure

Register for this Course

Overview: This workshop considers diversity in families based on class, culture, ethnicity and sexual orientation, from a socio-historical prospective. This serves as a template to expand the concept of “normal” or “functional” families. Focus will be on culturally sensitive practice. Studying intercultural families provides the practitioner with insights into diverse family structures and their functions. This gives the family clinician a framework in dealing with important issues of cultural diversity.

Objectives: Participants will: 1) understand diverse family structures and their meanings; 2) learn to apply therapeutic techniques with sensitivity to what is culturally functional; and 3) understand the stresses of cultural diversity and western concepts of normal.

Method(s) of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and handouts.
