End of Life Decision-Making And The Helping Professions Serving The Elderly
Overview: Tragically, the “Golden Years” are tarnished for many seniors, particularly those who are poor, are a minority, or frail. The elderly are often the most vulnerable and in the greatest need of legal, health, and consumer services. The aim of this course is to discuss and demystify the myriad legal, consumer, and elder protection issues that confront the elderly.
Objectives: Participants will: 1) understand the legal jargon and implications that often impact “End of Life Decisions Making”, including wills, living wills, durable power of attorney, guardianship, probate, estate and funeral planning, and long-term care concerns; 2) learn about consumer protection and elder rights and liberties, including Medicare/Medicaid abuse, home-care abuse and fraud, predatory lending, unfair and deceptive trade practices, etc.; and 3) explore strategies and resources to protect the rights of the elderly and to insure that their consumer rights, financial survival, health, safety, and quality of life are advanced.
Method(s) of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and question and answer. Hypothetical vignettes and role-play will also be used. The class will receive handouts that will include a list of resources, a legal vocabulary key, and germane articles that expound on topics and themes covered. Participants will be encouraged to submit in advance questions to be discussed in the workshop.
