Child Welfare and the US Approach

The Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice & Research at the University of Pennsylvania is offering a ten-day training program in Child Welfare and the US Approach. This comprehensive course, to be held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, will include lectures as well as visits to a number of agencies, programs, and sites in the community.

Topics covered will include:
• An Overview of the United States Child Welfare System
• The Effect of Child Maltreatment on Child Development
• History of Children’s Health and Social Welfare Policy in the U.S.
• Medical Diagnosis of Child Abuse
• The Child Advocacy Center Model of Multidisciplinary Child Abuse Investigations
• The Legal Framework of Child Abuse in the United States
• Effective Treatment for Traumatized Children and Adolescents
• Child Welfare Advocacy and System Reform
• Effective Child Abuse Prevention and Intervention

Students will have the opportunity to see programs and services firsthand. Some of the scheduled sites are:

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to learn about the programs and services offered to abused and neglected children.

Government Child Welfare Agency where students will meet with agency leadership to learn about services offered through a U.S. public child welfare system.

Community-based Day Care Center.

A Child Advocacy Center that includes the police special victims unit, the District Attorney’s office, and the child welfare agency sexual abuse investigation.

The Achieving Independence Center that provides services and support to older youth in the foster care system.

Philadelphia Family Court. Students will be able to tour this historic building, observe actual child abuse cases in court, and meet with a judge.

A Community Umbrella Agency that provides a full spectrum of community-based services to families involved in the child welfare system.
