Christopher Mallios, JD, is an Adjunct Faculty Member of the School of Social Policy & Practice and an Attorney Advisor for AEquitas: The Prosecutors' Resource on Violence Against Women. AEquitas is project of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape in partnership with the Battered Women’s Justice Program and is funded by the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women to provide training, consultation and resources focused on prosecutors nationwide addressing the latest and best information about how to handle sexual violence, stalking and dating and domestic violence cases. Mr. Mallios is part of a small but select group of people chosen by AEquitas to train prosecutors across the nation.
Prior to becoming a national leader with AEquitas, Mr. Mallios enjoyed success as a local leader in Philadelphia. For most of his twenty-two years as an attorney, he has worked in the criminal justice system of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, fighting vigilantly to ensure that victims of sexual violence, stalking, and domestic/dating violence receive the best possible response from the criminal justice system. After achieving success as a senior trial lawyer in the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, the District Attorney selected Mr. Mallios to supervise that unit, a job that he did for six years. In that role, he developed and implemented policies for a staff of thirty-two people responsible for the prosecution rape, child abuse, domestic violence, and elder abuse cases. He guided the District Attorney’s Office toward a victim-centered approach to the prosecution of sexual violence, child abuse and dating and domestic violence, and, under his leadership, the District Attorney’s Office earned a national reputation as aggressive and ethical advocates for abuse victims.
Mr. Mallios served for ten years as the District Attorney’s Hate Crimes Coordinator. His work included overseeing the prosecution of hate crimes and developing a program to train prosecutors how to effectively respond to and prosecute hate crimes. He adapted the training program for police officers and presented it to the Philadelphia Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police, and Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
Mr. Mallios has received numerous awards for his dedication to victims’ rights. In 2009, the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations presented him with the Award for Human Rights in Law Enforcement. In 2006, he received the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance Team Excellence Award for leading the charge to bring state-of-the-art video recording of forensic interviews of child abuse victims to Philadelphia, a practice that has now become routine.
Over the years, Mr. Mallios’ work and dedication have earned him an excellent reputation in the local court system, police department, and victim advocacy community, all of which continue to count on and consider him to be an invaluable source of knowledge and guidance. He has served as an Adjunct Professor at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law since 2007 and has given numerous guest lectures at SP2 and beyond.
Mr. Mallios brings years of experience and expertise protecting the rights and safety of victims of intimate violence to the Ortner Center. By connecting the Ortner Center with AEquitas, Mr. Mallios facilitates a bidirectional exchange between researchers and practitioners.
