Scholarships at the School

On Thursday, October 19, the School hosted its inaugural Scholarship Tea, bringing together more than 20 scholarship donors and recipients. The 2006-2007 scholarship recipients are an impressive group, committed to social work practice, research, and administration on a number of fronts. They are champions of children’s educational initiatives, human rights, LGBTQ activism, health care for under- and uninsured populations, and community organizing. They provide oncology care, crisis intervention, therapeutic counseling, and sexual and reproductive health information. They confront issues related to poverty, crime, adoption and foster care, and housing. They serve victims of domestic violence, assist with mental health initiatives, shape social welfare policy, and work in local and international arenas. Simply stated, they are the future of social work.
There are currently more than thirty named scholarships at the School that are awarded to SP² masters and doctoral students. The scholarship donors who attended the tea had the opportunity to witness how their gifts – and those of other donors – support these talented students as they pursue degrees in social work, social policy, and social welfare. Some scholarships have clear parameters for choosing the recipient (i.e., the Dorothy Kramer Bergstein Oncology Scholarship is given to a second year student whose primary area of interest is in the field of oncology or hospice care), while others have a broadly defined objective (i.e., “to provide financial assistance to a deserving graduate student”). Regardless of which category the scholarship falls into, one thing is certain: all of the SP² scholarship donors make a lasting impact on the social work profession.
