Message from the Dean
Happy Holidays!
Around campus, the winter holiday season is in full swing. Once again, the starry lights have been hung in the trees on Locust Walk, the Bookstore’s holiday sale is underway, and two weeks ago we saw the first accumulating snowfall of the year. The holiday season accentuates the acts of giving that alumni, students, faculty, and staff engage in on a daily basis.
For the second consecutive year, the Doctoral Student Steering Committee and the school’s Student Council are conducting a winter essentials drive, collecting coats, blankets, and toiletries for New Visions day shelter in Camden. At the same time, the Class Gift Committee is gearing up for the 2008 Campaign’s second semester kickoff. Current students have benefited from the previous three class gifts (two renovated classrooms and a new student lounge), and the Class of 2008 is preparing to “pay it forward.” Their class gift will upgrade the basement hallway to a welcoming and modern gateway to Caster’s classrooms. And after the New Year, 10 students will be traveling to Hancock County, Mississippi to spend 10 days of their winter break supporting and aiding Katrina victims who are still struggling to return to pre-hurricane normalcy.
Alumni and friends have been giving as well. One hundred and thirty seven alumni and friends have already supported the annual fund this year (there’s still time to make a gift before the end of the calendar year). Marjorie Gordon Schaye, CW’75 and a member of the SP2 Board of Overseers, is serving as the matching donor for this year’s Class Gift Campaign. And Paula Nickey, MSW’76 generously supported the renovation of the third floor Caster conference room earlier this fall.
As we reflect back on the year behind us and look forward to the year ahead, keep an eye out for the SP2 Review—the School’s annual publication—which will be arriving in mailboxes shortly. The publication highlights all that the School has accomplished in the last year. If you want to get a head start on making 2008 the year in which you learn more, explore a new area of practice, or just accumulate your CE credits, check out the spring Continuing Education and Professional Development schedule. As always, our gift to alumni is a $10 discount on any SP2 CE course.
Best wishes to you and yours for a warm and joyous holiday season.

Roundtree, MSW'56, and is commemorated on a new plaque at the center of the room.
