- Jeff Draine is a behavioral health services researcher associated with the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research.
- He studies the intersection of behavioral health with the criminal justice system. Integrating a public health perspective with research on criminal justice processes, he examines how policy and practice impact community inclusion of people with mental illnesses, substance use disorders, and HIV who come in contact with the law.
- He is currently undertaking an NIMH funded study of Critical Time Intervention (CTI) for men with mental illness moving out of New Jersey Prisons and into Camden. This is among the first tests of CTI for people leaving prison, and it is a collaboration with Steininger Behavioral Care Services and Dan Herman in the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
- He is also conducting an NIDA funded study of TEACH Inside TEACH Outside, an empowerment and education based prevention intervention for people leaving Philadelphia jails. This work is in collaboration with Laura McTighe at Philadelphia FIGHT, Philippe Bourgois in the departments of Anthropology and Family Medicine, and Tom Tenhave in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
- Dr. Draine’s emerging projects include examinations of police decisions and police-based intervention regarding people with mental illness in Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia and reentry services for people leaving jail with HIV.
