The "Poverties": Competing Definitions and Alternative Approaches to Measurement
Project Description:
"Rich" and "poor" are multidimensional concepts of considerable value in comparative social research. The purpose of this project is to explore the conceptual and methodological issues associated with the application of these concepts in cross-national comparative research. More specifically, the projects seeks to: 1) identify international efforts at national accounts reporting on which contemporary approaches to "wealth" and "poverty" assessment are based; 2) identify the major concepts associated with "poverty" and "wealth" assessment in the context of national accounting systems; 3) identify approaches to the application of selected "poverty" and "wealth" concepts to various population groups; and 4) identify the underlying causal explanations associated with the application of each approach to understanding the origins of poverty and wealth. The project also focuses on the emergence, in recent years, of more comprehensive measures of "poverty" and "wealth" assessment.
