Dr. Freeman specializes in African American intellectual history, critical race theory, social policy and social movements. He has received research support from Indiana University, the Organization of American Historians, the University of Alabama, Rutgers University, and the National Institute of Mental Health. Currently, he is working on:
- A biography of Kenneth Bancroft Clark, an African American social psychologist and activist-intellectual.
- Clark is known best for his work on the Brown v. Board of Education case in which he argued that racial segregation was psychologically damaging.
- Clark is also recognized for his work on other school desegregation cases and antipoverty programs from the 1950s through the 1970s and for his attempt to theorize the intersections between race, power, and and social change.
