HIV Prevention Program among Substance Abusing SMI

Description: Persons with severe mental illness (SMI) are at increased risk for HIV and other blood borne infections. In addition, those with substance abuse problems are at even greater risk. This is a randomized trial of an HIV prevention intervention entitled PATH - Preventing AIDS Through Health for adults with SMI and substance abuse problems. PATH is delivered by case managers. Interviews are conducted with case managers and consumers at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months to assess the effectiveness of the interventions in terms of HIV knowledge, perception of risk, and sexual behaviors. Costs will also be evaluated
