Dual Degree Programs - Master of Social Work/Juris Doctor Program (MSW/JD)
At the University of Pennsylvania the Law School and the School of Social Policy & Practice hold distributive justice and fair, equitable treatment for all persons central to their missions. In keeping with the educational philosophies of the two schools, that is, to prepare legal and social work professionals who will actively pursue a more just society, the two schools offer a dual MSW/JD program that captures critical and permanent aspects of the two separate programs. The dual degree program equips students to practice their professions with a thorough grounding in each discipline. The graduate is prepared to carry out viable systems change activities because of this unique educational experience.
The program is designed to have students complete the two-year MSW program and the three-year JD program in four years. Students spend their first year at either the Law School or the School of Social Policy & Practice. In subsequent years, they spend time in both Schools. Upon successful completion of the four-year joint program, the student receives both the Master of Social Work (MSW) and Juris Doctor (JD).
