Computing - Setting up your E-mail

Introduction

As a School of Social Policy & Practice student you will receive access to a variety of accounts. Some of these accounts you will need to create. Some are dependent on other accounts and some will be created for you. Over the course of your academic career you will be using all of these accounts and be completely confused in determining where to use which account and what the password is. To add to your confusion the University will be converting one of these accounts, the PennNetwork ID during the Fall of 2002 into a PennKey account.

A few terms defined

Your PennNetwork ID. (Think of this as your University account) This account provides access to many important services. To initiate this account, you must first obtain your Penn ID Card (PennCard) or have accessed Campus Express. You will not be able to create a e-mail account without this.

Your School of Social Policy & Practice e-mail account. This is a general student account, given to you by Social Work for Email. The userid, or login name, will be the same as your PennNetwork ID. The School will be using this account to send important announcements and course information.

{These accounts are related but distinct from each other. The passwords can be the same but don't have to be}

How to set up your SP2 e-mail account

First create your PennNetwork ID by swiping your PennCard at one of these locations if you haven't created one using Campus Express.

Next, prior to Labor Day Weekend we will be mailing to your home address a tip sheet containing your e-mail account info and how to change your password.

After Labor Day Weekend, or if you're on campus before then, contact Albert Louie to obtain your e-mail account username and to set your password.

During late Summer and Fall 2002 I will be distributing the Penn Connect CD, containing Penn's basic suite of internet related software and virus protection. It's not mandatory but good to have.

How to connect your computer to Penn...

Aside from your e-mail account you will not have to do any special configuration with your computer to connect to Penn as long as you can get to the internet. How you connect to the internet will depend on your particular situation. For on-campus students you may need to purchase an ethernet card to take advantage of the high speed connection while for off-campus you will most likely need a modem. Either can be purchased at the Computer Connection.
