Welcome from the Dean

Richard James Gelles, PhD

Summertime, and the living is easy…not so at the School of Social Policy & Practice this summer!  After a busy and productive spring semester, we are abuzz with preparations for the upcoming academic year.

In April the school sponsored a hearing on child welfare on behalf of the Pennsylvania Task Force on Child Protection.

April also saw yet another Community Teamworks project come to fruition.  Faculty, staff, students and alumni joined together for a day of service at Sayre Health Center in West Philadelphia.  Engaging with the local community and galvanizing connections within the SP2 community was a joy and has created even more excitement for upcoming projects.

Symposium explores bullying across the lifespan

In recognition of National Social Work Month, SP2’s Alumni Council presented a compelling and informative symposium entitled Bullying Across the Lifespan: Targeting the Bully.  In recent years, the problem of bullying has garnered a great deal of attention as celebrities such as stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, Lady Gaga and even Michelle Obama have lent their time to the cause.  While the majority of media reports and resources have focused on the affects of bullying among school-age youth, SP2 Alumni Council Chair Santo D. Marabella (DSW ’91) points out bullying effects people of all ages.

SP2 Tips its “Caps to Community”

Benjamin Bruckman, NPL'12, along with a small team of students focused on social change, came up with a way to establish a permanent inventory of commencement regalia for the students graduating from the School of Social Policy & Practice through the “Caps to Community” program.

“The Caps to Community Fund allows Penn graduates to re-affirm Commencement traditions, while taking part in a collective action to mobilize untapped resources on behalf of Philadelphia,” Bruckman says. “Through an alternative approach, we are creating a sustainable annual fund to support the immediate neighborhoods around campus.”
