Summer Reading List
Dear Student:
In preparation for taking SWRK 603: American Racism and Social Work Practice this fall, students should have an understanding of African American history and/or the history of racial minorities in the United States. A good historical background in the history of American racial minorities is essential in order to fully understand the required readings in SWRK 603 and for your growth as a social worker.
If you have not taken any coursework in African American history or the history of minority racial groups, it is strongly recommended that each student read the following pages from the two texts:
- John Hope Franklin, Alfred A. Moss, Jr., From Slavery to Freedom, a History of African Americans, 8th Edition (New York: McGraw Hill, 2005), p. 1-291
- Ronald Takaki, A Different Mirror, A History of Multicultural America (Boston: Back Bay Books, 1994), p. 24-50, 79-105, 139-428
Students can find copies at many public and university libraries or used copies for purchase online and at many college bookstores. Readings from Franklin and Takaki should be done over the summer prior to matriculation in the fall semester.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
