The Penn DSW Experience

Penn’s Doctorate in Clinical Social Work (DSW) set the pace. We were the first social work practice doctorate. Now our online format makes us the most accessible.

Our online program offers all the advantages of a world class learning community in a highly interactive, relational, accessible and convenient format. Balancing the rigor of doctoral education with the practical considerations of busy working professionals, our students complete the coursework and dissertation simultaneously, earning the degree in 3 years without career disruption.

The Penn DSW Mission

Graduates of the University of Pennsylvania’s Doctorate in Clinical Social Work program are prepared to:

  1. Design and implement empirically grounded social work interventions.
  2. Conduct sound, evidence-based inquiry on issues of significance to social work practice.
  3. Position themselves as content experts with deep knowledge in at least one chosen area related to social work practice and disseminate this knowledge through teaching, presentation, practice, and scholarly activities.
  4. Serve as educators who teach and engage in course and curriculum development.

The Penn DSW Advantage

We use a combination of campus immersion experiences and online course delivery (videoconferencing) that works for working professionals, wherever they live. Students enjoy an unparalleled educational experience, coming together to interact and learn on an Ivy League campus during the campus immersion experiences.

Technology is used to connect, not to distance. We recognize the importance of relational learning and all of our online course delivery and educational strategies are chosen with an eye toward building knowledge in community.

Renowned faculty from all over the world teach cutting-edge courses on the latest in clinical practice, research, and teaching. Our graduates’ successes prove that the DSW is a gateway to fulfilling careers as social work practice leaders and educators.

Learn from clinical experts, inspired teachers, and real-world scholars and become one yourself.
