Teaching If heading to an academic post, it is important to have the opportunity to learn about organizing a syllabus, lecturing, etc., and to get comfortable in the instructor role. Being prepared to teach one or more courses as one begins a first academic post will be advantageous. To that end, SP2 provides students in the PhD program with an opportunity to gain teaching experience through our master’s programs. After decisions have been made regarding which master’s-level courses will be assigned a Teaching Assistant (TA), PhD student learning needs are taken into consideration so as to make the best fit for all. Given that not all courses have TAs, a doctoral student might not be assigned to their first choice or receive a TA-ship during a given semester. In these situations, please remember that there are future semesters in which to be a TA. We are committed to providing these opportunities for learning. All Teaching Assistant assignments must be coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs. Students should not make their own arrangements with an instructor to TA a course. Please see the PhD Student Handbook for information about eligibility for teaching.
