"I chose SP2 because of the school’s interdisciplinary approach to change-making, social justice, and leadership, and to learn from peers who are similarly striving to be leaders in their fields and impact the lives of others.

“My most rewarding experience has been my group work, which I was reticent about given the challenges of time zones and working with other students from all over the world. But these relationships and connections have been meaningful to me, especially as an online student, in both building community and gaining inspiration.

“I was nervous about going back to graduate school at this phase of life, to balance work, rigorous academics, while raising 3 young children. But the frameworks I have gained, coupled with the latest, best practices in the field, have prepared me to launch this phase of my career, and to center work on empowering women to go back to school after career, life, or family commitments have been their priority. We need to do more for women in higher education, to ignite them to focus on themselves and give them the resources they need for success. SP2 has prepared me to lead this.”

Becca (she/her) is a PhD in Social Welfare student.

"From working at Penn’s School of Medicine, I knew the breadth and depth of the resources and opportunities throughout the University. When I decided I wanted to pursue a PhD, I was eager to return to an institution so dedicated to applied, actionable research. I was so thrilled (and surprised) to be accepted and once I found out that Dr. Culhane (whose work I’ve fangirled over for years) would be my advisor, the decision made itself.

"I knew the cohort would be impressive (and they are!) but I was nervous that they might be competitive or boastful. I am grateful to say that I was so wrong. Our cohort has provided the greatest support system with unending patience and unconditional affirmation. The group lifts each other up, seeks out resources and opportunities for one another, and are the greatest cheerleaders.

"Studying at Penn can be intimidating and endeavoring a PhD has been nerve-wracking and inevitably filled with some feelings of imposter syndrome, but we have had countless professors sit us down and say, 'You are smart. You belong here. And we are here to make sure that you are successful.' Because it is such a supportive environment it allows us to take risks, make mistakes, and grow."
