Welcome to student life at the School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2)!

At SP2, our students enjoy the advantages of a small, nurturing school community nestled in a large, vibrant teaching and research university. The School’s administration and faculty value student involvement, and students play an active role in shaping the School’s culture, policies, and future directions. Our students are invited to serve on SP2 and University governance and planning committees, where they have the chance to be heard on issues related to student policies and procedures, curriculum, and field placement/internships. Other opportunities for students to enhance their academic experience at SP2 include getting involved in student organizations and taking advantage of support centers and student hubs at the School and around campus.

The Office of Student Services works closely with students to help make life at SP2 as satisfying and rewarding as possible. Some of the many programs and events we offer are:

  • New Student Orientation, when faculty, staff and current students greet and help prepare new students for life at Penn.
  • Student Organizations offer students the opportunity to organize around worthy causes, meet new people, and stay involved in School and campus life.
  • SP2 Fridays provide an opportunity for students, alumni and faculty to socialize, network and enjoy refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Career fairs and Job Search Programs, offered in collaboration with Penn’s Career Services Office.
  • Deans/Student Leaders Meetings, in which students are invited to share their concerns and ideas with the Deans.
  • Student Affairs Fellows work with the Office of Student Services to share and provide feedback about their own student life experience and help with community-building and student support programming.
  • Self-care and Wellness Seminars and Activities, including mindfulness meditation, yoga, peer support and other tips and strategies for coping with stress and staying well.

At SP2 we strive to cultivate and nurture a culture of diversity and inclusion. Our students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as discussion groups, lectures and film nights that extend classroom learning about oppression and difference and raise awareness, understanding and respect for the intersectionality of race/ethnicity, gender, class, religion, sexuality, disability and other markers of difference.

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Center offers a wealth of resources. Other campus hubs and communities that offer support and resources to students include:  The Center for Hispanic Excellence: La Casa Latina; Makuu: The Black Cultural Center; Pan-Asia American Community House; Penn Women’s Center; and Greenfield Intercultural Center.

Penn’s Graduate Student Center (GSC) is a comfortable place to lounge and meet other graduate students from around campus. The GSC offers a variety of activities and resources for graduate students, including new student orientation events, social activities and academic support resources.

We invite you to immerse yourself in School and campus life and take full advantage of the many opportunities that SP2 and Penn have to offer!
