Dan (he/him/his) is completing the full-time, on-campus Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership (NPL) program.
_____
“I chose SP2 because it’s always been a dream of mine to attend Penn and after almost two decades of working in the public/nonprofit industry, I wanted to expand my knowledge and grow my community of learning with others that were dedicated to service to society. As an older student going in-person and full-time, it’s been inspiring to see so many others passionate about this work.

“One experience that stood out to me this year was time at the Social Impact Lab in Tennessee over the winter break. Getting to build meaningful relationships over time with fellow students and faculty while learning about myself and others was truly transformational. It’s a memory that I’ll always keep as impactful to my learning.

“Yet a story that stood out to me was from my very first night in class in social finance with Andy Lamas and Bruce Boyleston. Since it had been almost twenty years since I was in a formal college classroom as a student, I was a little hesitant of what to expect. Andy’s opening monologue that first class was exactly what I needed to hear and experience to put me at ease in this journey. The idea of taking what we learn at Penn back to our people and community is a message that has been a guiding principal throughout my experience."

Some highlights (more to come!) of yesterday’s "A Conversation with Nikole Hannah-Jones on The 1619 Project,” which drew a full house to Houston Hall’s Bodek Lounge.

Featuring Nikole Hannah-Jones and moderated by Ben Jealous, the event was presented by Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2) and co-hosted by the Annenberg School for Communication and Penn Carey Law.

SP2 Dean Sara S. Bachman cited the event as an example of the School’s commitment to acknowledging and working to dismantle oppression.  In conversation with Jealous, Hannah-Jones discussed the roots of “The 1619 Project,” the political polarization of today, her aim of complicating how we think about race in America, Penn Professor Dorothy E. Roberts’ contribution to her book, and the moral obligation to fight for a better world. SP2 Associate Dean for Inclusion Joretha Bourjolly concluded the discussion, emphasizing that conversations like this one are vital to the School’s mission.
